Dawki: About three hours from Shillong is this hidden gem (not so much now, thanks to Instagram Reels that have made this place a must-visit for everyone). Located in West Jaintia Hills, Dawki has the fascinating River Umngot that is known for its crystal clear water that is almost like transparent glass. The place shares its border with Bangladesh, so the border side can get a lot crowded with Bangladeshis. But ask the boatman (you can book a boat ride for Rs 800 for two for approx 45 minutes) to take you to the quieter side. The water is tranquil and emerald green and if you are lucky you would spot tiny fish too!

Escape the sweltering summer heat with a quick trip to Shillong. The good news is that to go to Shillong you no longer need to go via Guwahati airport. You can take a direct flight from Calcutta and save yourself the three-hour drive from Guwahati. The road to Cherrapunji is newly redone, so it’s smooth like butter. The weather, too, is mildly cold and will give you a much-needed respite. t2 lists some off-beat touristy things that you can do during your visit.

Nohkalikai Falls: We all know about the Seven Sisters Waterfall. However, do explore Nohkalikai Falls that has the water falling from a towering 1,120ft (approx) height and is believed to be the tallest plunge waterfall in the Indian subcontinent.

Garden of Caves: Meghalaya is known for a lot of beautiful spots and the Garden of Caves is a good destination to see waterfalls, bamboo bridge, caves and also drink natural medicinal water that are verified by the locals. There are 11 points here that you can cover in an hour (moderate walking speed).

Zip lining: If you are feeling adventurous just strap yourself and get ready to zip past the beautiful valley at Mawkdok/ Dympep, Cherrapunji. If you are not a thrill seeker, just pose against the beautiful backdrop and get mesmerised by the various shades of green while the clouds kiss the sky.

Mawlynnong village: If you have time at hand and are looking for a relaxed thing to do, take a walk in this village that’s said to be Asia’s cleanest village by Discover India. It is mostly inhabited by Khasi families. The place is filled with a lot of homestays, eating places and nature with cane baskets almost at every corner.
