The Sonarpur-Rajpur Municipality authorities have decided to shut down all markets and shops in all 35 wards, barring those dealing in essential commodities, for three days from October 28 because of a spike in Covid cases.

After a meeting with health department officials and the district administration on Tuesday, the civic body decided that markets and shops will remain closed for three days in an attempt to break the chain of infection.

Tree trunk crashes on bus on MG Road

A portion of a tree trunk fell on a private bus on MG Road in central Kolkata disrupting traffic for some time on Tuesday morning.

No one was injured, police said.

Traffic on both flanks of MG Road was disrupted for nearly 30 minutes, till the trunk was removed.

The incident happened at the MG Road-College Street crossing when a large trunk crashed on the bus ferrying passengers.

“The tree trunk fell because of unscientific pruning, as a result of which trunks bend and become unstable,” said a city-based naturalist.
