The lake covers an area of about 40sqkm and dates back to the Kakatiya dynasty. The lake was probably dug in the 13th century for irrigation purposes. Even today, the lake water irrigates the adjoining areas. The lake has over 13 islands. In recent times, an effort has been made to turn a few of the islands into eco-tourism hubs complete with modern amenities.
