Though monsoon has set in, there’s no respite from the sultry weather in Calcutta. The only way to escape this hot and humid weather is to take a quick trip to the land of clouds, Meghalaya, our very own Scotland of the East.

So, when I got an e-mail to review Courtyard by Marriott in Shillong I was excited. First, I would like to say that I have been to Shillong many times, for personal vacations, to cover NH7 Weekender and more. The popular hub of Police Bazar has always been my base and I would invariably put up at the same property that looked quite worn out but was centrally located, and besides there was no better hotel in the vicinity.

Hence when I Googled the location of Courtyard by Marriott and found out it’s a walking distance from the Police Bazar, I was eagerly waiting to check it out. Now, if you are really looking for an escape not very far from Calcutta, Shillong should be on the list because you no longer need to travel for three hours to reach via Guwahati airport. Just take a direct flight to the Umroi Airport or Shillong airport.

Upon landing in a very cute Shillong airport, I was greeted warmly and we soon left for the hotel and in 30 minutes I could spot the name of the hotel the moment we reached the forever busy Police Bazar area. After a smooth check-in to my room that offered a clear view of the lush green mountains, I headed straight to the lobby to check out the hotel.

My first impression of the property was impressive. The interiors of the hotel had a fine blend of contemporary with sleek designs but also had a warm and snug feeling to it with the usage of local art. The 182-key hotel had everything one would need for a work or leisure trip. Here’s a walkt hrough of the property...

1. Glimpse of the Executive Suite. Superior Room King, Superior Room Twin, Club Room King, Club Room Twin, Family Suite and East Castle Suite are the other room categories a traveller can choose from.

2. After your day trips and hikes, you must pamper yourself at Pura Vida — the inhouse spa. The wellness and fitness centre offers innumerable therapies that will cleanse your mind and soul. Try the exotic potlimassage and thank us later!

3. The Gaming Room is a well-thought spot for kids. Air hockey, billiards, gaming stations... there’s a lot to keep your child happy and busy.

4. The hotel proudly boasts of Shillong Baking Company, right near the lobby. It is hard to ignore the aroma of freshly-baked cakes and breads that is finely complemented by the smell of perfectlybrewed coffee. A quick work meet or a coffee date, this spot is your must-visit. They also have goodies for takeaway.

Do not leave without trying some traditional local cuisine that combines rustic flavours. Both the hotel and innumerable restaurants in Police Bazar area serve local cuisine. We tried Jadoh (authentic local rice dish), Pashor Kait (banana stem), Muli Khleh (radish salad with sesame), Tungtap (spicy chutney made of dry fish, tomato and chillies), Local-style Chicken Curry and Dohshain Sniang (pork balls).

The local mulberries! It is easily available on the streets, however we were greeted by them in the room.
