As a merchant sailor, I consider myself lucky to have visited many beautiful places across the world. Last week, I was in Ajaccio (Corsica), France, where I got the opportunity to visit the mansion of its most famous son, Napoleon Bonaparte, the French military commander and political leader who rose to prominence during the French Revolution, about whom we read in history books in school. Maison Bonaparte, the pale yellow colour mansion with tall blue windows where Napoleon was born on August 15, 1769, has been beautifully restored and renovated. It serves as a museum now and attracts visitors in droves

The street in which Maison Bonaparte is located resembles closely the streets of north Kolkata. Even the French windows in most buildings on this street are very tall just like the ones we see in the heritage buildings of Kolkata

The brush with history as well as the walk down the street bustling with eateries, inns, salons, palm trees and parked cars gave me a nice experience altogether

A quick return to the quaint port and I happily settled down to a glass of beer, mussels and French fries to satiate my tastebuds, even as I gazed into the horizon and took random shots on my mobile
