Nifty Indian all-rounder and Chennai Super Kings skipper Ravindra Jadeja bets on family time as the best way to relax. In The Telegraph chat, the ASICS brand ambassador shares his fitness mantra and more.
Different people have different definitions of fitness. What is fitness for you?
I am completely aligned with the philosophy of my favourite performance brand, ASICS, that is having a sound mind in a sound body. This philosophy is more apt now than it has ever been in the past. I believe an active and a healthy lifestyle is important, and I usually stick to my routine, which includes waking up early, following a balanced diet, working out, and spending time with my family.
When did fitness become a part of your life consciously?
Fitness has always been very important for me and has come naturally to me. Since I was young I have always played various sports and been active in farms. The day I decided to take the sport professionally, fitness became the most crucial aspect and the focus on what I eat, how much I train became very conscious. Over the years, my fitness has helped me stay consistent and true to my game.
Can you share with us your journey on the fitness path so far?
Running has been a vital part of my fitness journey, apart from that I combine my cricket skills training with body-weight training to keep myself ready for the high standards of the international cricket season.
How has your association with ASICS been so far?
ASICS has an incredible track record for helping athletes across sports and enabling them to reach the peak of their potential. I identify with their vision and philosophy of promoting sound mind and sound body and hope that together we can drive a more relevant and meaningful change in the minds and lives of young athletes. Our aim is to increase the participation of people in sports and fitness, and I am confident of catalysing a positive change in this direction with ASICS. I am happy to be part of this journey with the brand and working towards unlocking the unique power of sport to uplift our minds. Good quality gear is extremely important in unlocking a player’s 100 per cent potential because it lets the athlete focus on just the game. ASICS’ gears make me feel secure and confident at every step, thanks to their technologically advanced products.
What is a regular fitness regimen for you?
Making good lifestyle a habit, eating the right things, getting into a routine and exercising the right way. The main thing according to me is consistency.
Being an international cricketer, you would know best about the importance of resting as much as a good exercise routine. How crucial do you think rest and relaxation is before a big match?
If you ask me, the game of cricket at the highest level is as much about your mental toughness as it is about your cricketing skills. For a good mindset, it is important to give adequate rest to your mind and body. I sometimes meditate, talk to family and listen to my favourite songs to rejuvenate. It’s imperative to spend time focusing on achieving a sound mind in a sound body.
How do you relax?
The best way for me to unwind is by spending time with my family and most importantly, my daughter... she is my stress-buster. Whenever I get some time off, I visit my farmhouse and spend time with my horses as they have become a part of my life and have been there through all the highs and lows.
