Kajol kick-started the season’s festivities with a visit to her family puja on Maha Saptami, a tradition set in place over 60 years ago by Sati Rani Devi, her paternal grandmother.

Every year, the Bollywood actress attends her family puja in Balkanji Bari, Santa Cruz — one of the most exquisite pujas of Mumbai. This year, Saptami festivities for the Mukherjees were extra special, with a family reunion taking place after a long time on account of the pandemic.

Kajol's cousin and actress, Sharbani Mukherjee, and her father Rono Mukherjee, also visited the pandal on Saptami morning. Long hugs, teary eyes and some good ol’ nostalgia were on the menu for the day’s celebrations.

Kajol’s Bengali roots stem from her father, Shomu Mukherjee. The actress has been celebrating Durga Puja since she was two-years old with anjali, bhog and an array of Durga Puja attire.

Every year, the family hosts a puja in Mumbai, a tradition that began in the 1960s and continues till today. Extended family from across the country fly in to partake in the festivities. Bhajas, bhajans and daily Bengali plays are an integral part of the celebrations.
