It’s not every day that you get to see three Nobel laureates in the same frame, that too just chilling.
In a tweet dated September 19, Nandana Dev Sen, daughter of Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen, wrote: “Two #Nobel Laureates at lunch is where I draw the line,” said my husband John. “But today we are eating with THREE?” :-)
“Such lovely September afternoon, excessive Nobels notwithstanding!” the post added.
Nandana also posted the photograph on her Instagram page.
Amartya Sen, 87, won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his “contributions to welfare economics” in 1998.
Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee and wife Esther Duflo, along with Michael Kremer, were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2019 “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty”.
The two Indian Nobel laureates go back a long way, as Sen and Abhijit’s father Dipak Banerjee were colleagues and friends. “Amartya has known Abhijit since he was one-and-a-half or two years old,” Abhijit’s mother Nirmala Banerjee had said. “We were in Berkeley then and Amartya was also there. Our two families used to get together then.”
Abhijit was also very close to Nabaneeta Dev Sen. The celebrated writer and Nandana’s mother was always “Mashi” to the 60-year-old Nobel laureate and he has always been “Jhimada” (nickname) to Nandana.
Nandana, now a children’s author and child-rights activist, credited her husband, John Makinson, the former chairman of Penguin Random House, for the “Nobel photographs”. Nandana and John live in New York, but also spend time in their London and Kolkata addresses.
