He has won great acclaim for directing the Hoichoi web series Mandaar. And now Anirban Bhattacharya is all set to try his hands at directing a feature film.
Ballavpurer Roopkotha is a quirky horror comedy that revolves around the eccentric story of Ballavpur Rajbari’s last descendant.
The music of the film will be composed by the talented Subhadeep Guha and Debraj Bhattacharya. Ballavpurer Roopkotha is written by Anirban Bhattacharya with Prateek Dutta, and the cinematography will be led by Soumik Halder.
Based on Badal Sarkar’s popular drama piece, Ballavpurer Roopkotha will tell the story of the almost crumbling Rajbari of Ballavpur, which only has two men living in it, the last descendant of the Ray dynasty, Bhupati Ray and his menial Manohar.
The dynasty merely exists as there is no trace of wealth. Both the dwellers are overburdened with heavy debts until one day they get a proposal to sell off their property. What continues is a hullabaloo of events revolving around Bhupati Ray, Manohar, the buyers and one ghost that makes Ballavpur Rajbari a place of chaos for that night!
Excited about bringing the movie to the audience, Anirban Bhattacharya said: “I have always been extremely fond of horror comedies/ satire since childhood and needless to say we are fortunate enough to have seen some fantastic horror comedies from great film-makers over the years. I won’t say that this particular genre hasn’t been tapped by Bengali film-makers before as there have been Bengali movies that parallelly experimented with horror and comedy in the same narrative. However, the number is quite less. Ballavpurer Roopkotha will be light-hearted yet surprising. My last work explored the dark, gory side of human conscience but this time I want to keep it as effervescent as possible. I’m starting off my first feature film as a director with SVF and I am glad that they have entrusted me with creating a project that I have always wanted to do.”
