A youth died after being reportedly stabbed several times on Friday morning at a busy intersection on KL Das Road in Chitpore, close to a police kiosk.
Eyewitnesses told police that two youths, in their late 20s, were seen engaged in an altercation around 8.45am. A scuffle ensued and one of the youths fell down on the road.
The other youth then pulled out what looked like a sharp weapon and stabbed repeatedly the one who fell. The assailant then fled and is yet to be arrested.
A yellow cab that was parked near the busy intersection, off a railway godown in Chitpore, got stained by the victim’s blood, onlookers told the police.
Residents of the area alerted the police as the youth, later identified as Sheikh Dulara, 29, lay on the ground, bleeding.
Dulara, a resident of the nearby Cossipore Road, had died by the time the police took him to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. “Doctors at the hospital declared him ‘brought dead’”, said an officer.
“There were injury marks on the victim’s neck and other parts of the body. The gashes are deep. It appears someone hit him with a sharp weapon out of anger,” said an officer of Calcutta police.
“We will wait for the post-mortem report for a better understanding of the nature of injuries. Primarily, this appears to be a case of murder.”
“It could be a fallout of a fight over dues. We are scanning CCTV footage,” he said.
