“Sandip Pun had some differences over sharing money with friends, who allegedly beat him up on Monday evening. Sandip was rescued by his mother, who took him inside their house. But sometime later Sandip told his mother that he was going out to buy cold drinks,” said an officer of Ekbalpore police station.

Soon after Sandip stepped out of his home, he was grabbed by some youths who were waiting for him, his mother said on Tuesday.

“They attacked him with a knife,” his mother said. The youths fled, except one whom neighbours caught after they heard Sandip’s scream for help. The youth arrested has been identified as Akbar Ali, 20.

“We are trying to identify all other gang members,” said a senior officer of the Port division.
