On this day the General Post Office (GPO) building was opened to the public.
The construction of the building, one of the most impressive examples
of colonial architecture in the city, had started in 1864.

The architect was Walter B. Granville. The imposing building has as its features Corinthian columns and a magnificent dome that rises over 220ft.
The GPO building is a Calcutta landmark. Two other spectacular buildings designed by Granville are the high court and Indian Museum.
