On this day, the Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) was nationalised. The first horse-drawn tramcar ran from Kolkata to Armenian Ghat in February, 1873, though the service was discontinued, to be re-introduced. The CTC was registered in London on December 22, 1880. Horse-drawn tramcars were back again. From early 1900, electric-powered trams were introduced to the city.

Trams became a lifeline of the city. In 1967, the West Bengal government passed the Calcutta Tramways Company (Taking Over of Management) Act and took over the management on July 19.

By the 90s, the tram network in Kolkata was dying and there was even a proposal to end the service in the city (Kolkata is the only Indian city that has this service). It survives still, though in a very reduced form.
