Mathematician Jadab Chandra Chakravarti passed away on this day. The books that he had written in Bengali on arithmetic and algebra became famous, were taught in classrooms for decades and were translated into several other Indian languages. Arithmetic was translated into English soon after its publication in 1890.
Chakravarti was born near Sirajganj town (now in Bangladesh). He lost his father early and his family had very limited means.
He moved to Kolkata for higher education and obtained his M.A. degree in mathematics from Presidency College at the University of Calcutta in 1882. As a student of Presidency he taught at St. Paul’s Cathedral Mission College to pay his fees. He joined City College, Kolkata, and later, Aligarh Muslim College, where he taught till retirement.
