Writer and teacher Ajit Kumar Guha, who had championed the Bengali language in East Pakistan (later Bangladesh), passed away on this day.
Guha had studied at Comilla (now in Bangladesh), where he was born, and got his MA from Calcutta University. He also attended Visva-Bharati in Santiniketan from 1940 to 1942.
He taught at Jagannath College in Dhaka (in Bangladesh) for many years.
He was one of the leaders of the campaign for Bengali that started in East Bengal (later East Pakistan) against the Pakistani authorities.
He was jailed in the 1950s more than once for taking part in the movement for Bengali. He was one of the main organisers of the East Pakistan literary meet in 1954.
Guha wrote extensively on Rabindranath Tagore and his works.
