Amitabha Bhattacharyya, a production engineer whose contribution to his field is considerable, was born on this day in 1931.

He taught at the mechanical engineering department at Jadavpur University where he set up the department of production engineering. His work on the technology of cutting tools is pioneering.

He is credited with developing a ceramic material used for making cutting tools.

He won several national and international awards for his work.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex government agency in India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the most prestigious science awards, for his contribution to engineering.

He died in 1992 at the age of 60.
