Bengali writer Gajendra Kumar Mitra was born on this day.
He is best known for his novel Kolkatar Kachhei, which received the 1959 Sahitya Akademi Award.

He wrote hundreds of short stories and many novels. His fiction did not try to break moulds; rather, he wrote in the conventional way, exploring society, everyday life and the lives of people.
Kolkatar Kachhei (Not far away from Calcutta) remains one of the best-loved Bengali novels.
Mitra founded the well-known Bengali publishing firm Mitra and Ghosh Publishers with his friend Sumathanath Ghosh.
