On this day, the British East India Company army led by Lord Cornwallis captured the old city fort, or pete, in Bangalore, from Tipu Sultan, two weeks before they captured Tipu’s military fort in the city.
Though the British did not suffer many casualties, the event is memorialised by a painting by Robert Home titled “The Death of Colonel Moorhouse, Madras artillery, at the Storming of the Pettah Gate of Bangalore”.
On March 21, Cornwallis attacked Tipu’s military fort secretly. The British army crossed the ditch with scaling ladders and made a breach. Cornwallis captured the fort.
He would siege Seringapatam, Tipu’s capital, in 1792. Tipu would be finally defeated and killed in 1799.
