A strong editorial appeared in Amrita Bazar Patrika on this day titled ‘The Employment of Natives to Higher Posts’. “Fifty thousand deserving Natives are pining away under discouragement, disappointment and poverty, while Government servants are indented from England at tenfold costs. That they are more deserving than the Natives is an assertion which is often times made but it is neither believed by the people nor by those who make it. If it is said that the Europeans have some advantages over Natives... it must be admitted also that the Natives have advantages which the Europeans do not possess. A Native knows more of his country than a foreigner can possibly do,” a section of it said.
