On this day, the Bihar and Orissa divisions of the Bengal Province in British India were separated and the Province of Bihar and Orissa was formed. The Montagu–Chelmsford Reforms, which were enacted through the Government of India Act 1919, raised the number of members of the Bihar and Orissa Legislative Council from 43 to 103. On April 1, 1936, the province was divided into Bihar Province and Orissa Province. The princely states that were Odia-speaking were placed under the authority of the Eastern States Agency.
