Calcutta Public Library, which would later become The National Library, started its journey on this day. In 1902, it was merged with Imperial Secretariat Library and Imperial Library was founded. After Independence, The National Library came into being. It received the status of an institution of national importance and was opened to the public on February 1, 1953. The National Library, largest in the country, is the permanent repository of all books, newspapers and periodicals published in India. The imposing Belvedere House was the library earlier; now the books have been shifted to Bhasha Bhavan on the same premises. Belvedere House used to be the residence of the lieutenant-governor of Bengal.
