British administrator John Adam passed away on this date. He was 41.

Adam had been appointed acting Governor-General of the British East India Company in 1823 after Lord Hastings left India. Adam remained in his post for seven months, till the arrival of Lord Amherst in August 1823.

This short period was marked by unpopular decisions taken by him.

Adam cancelled the license for residence in India James Silk Buckingham, the founder of Calcutta Journal, which was severely critical of the government. Other regulations restricting freedom of press were passed.

During this period, official support was also withdrawn from the Palmer banking firm.
