The poet, Kabishekhar Kalidas Roy, was born on this day. He studied at Berhampore College and later at Scottish Church College in Kolkata. He started his work life as a school teacher in Rangpur district. He retired as assistant headmaster at Bhawanipore Mitra Institution.
His poetry, of the lyrical school, was influenced both by Vaishnav literary tradition and Tagore.
He wrote in a simple style. Emotions were an important element in his verse. His first volume of poetry came out when he was 18. Several others followed, such as Parnaput, Chittachita and Ballari. He wrote a number of essays on Bengali literature. He received the Deshikottam honour from Visva-Bharati and several other awards and honours, including from Calcutta University and Rabindra Bharati University.
He was remembered as an excellent teacher, interested in the intellectual and moral development of students.
