On this day, the British forces sacked the town of Hooghly. The British, led by Robert Clive, had recaptured Calcutta from Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah on January 2.

On January 9, a force of 650 men, led by Captain Coote and Major Kilpatrick, entered the town and launched an attack. In retaliation, Siraj marched towards Calcutta and camped beyond the Maratha Ditch from February 3. Clive struck at the Nawab’s men and scared by his losses, Siraj concluded the Treaty of Alinagar with the East India Company. This restored to the company its factories and allowed the company to fortify Calcutta and to have its own mint.
