On this day, the syndicate of Calcutta University began to function. Its first meeting was held at Calcutta Medical College.
The university was established in 1857. The Calcutta University Act had come into force on January 24, 1857, and the 41-member senate had been formed as the university’s policy-making body.

The university had started functioning from a few rented rooms in Camac Street. For several years to follow the senate and syndicate meetings were held in a room at Writers’ Buildings.
