Kolkata Improvement Trust (KIT) was established on this day following the enactment of Kolkata Improvement Act of 1911. The body was formed with its own funds to implement schemes for the development of the city and its stre-ets, to improve the sani-tary system and provide housing. Living conditions needed improvement after an outbreak of plague in 1896.
KIT implemented more than a hundred schemes for the city, including the extension of Park Street, the construction of the Central Avenue, Southern Avenue and the Dhakuria Lakes and in East Kolkata, Beliaghata Lake. It created Dakshinapan, a popular city centre in Dhakuria, along with Uttarapan, its counterpart near Ultadanga. In 2017, the KIT was merged with the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA).
