On this day one of the most severe earthquakes in India’s history devastated Bihar and Nepal.

The tremors were felt in Kolkata, where buildings were affected. The 8.0 magnitude earthquake completely razed the towns of Munger and Muzaffarpur.

The areas from Purnea in the east to Champaran in the west and from Kathmandu in the north to Munger in the south suffered the most damage. In Bihar alone 7,253 deaths were recorded. In total about 12,000 people could have died, it was estimated.

Many buildings were damaged in Kolkata and the tower of St Paul’s Cathedral
collapsed.
