On this day Swami Vijnanananda performed the dedication of the new temple of Sri Ramakrishna at Belur Math.

Born Hariprasanna Chattopadhyaya, Swami Vijnanananda had renounced the world in 1896 and joined the Alambazar Math, where he stayed with the disciples of Sri Ramakrishna. He was an engineer by training.

His professional expertise was a great help when the Belur Math property was purchased. He first remodelled the existing building and then built new structures, including the shrine. The consecration of the new premises had taken place on December 9, 1898.

At Belur Math, he had presided over the construction of a strong embankment on the river in front of the main building. He had undertaken the preparation of a plan for a new temple of Sri Ramakrishna, based on the ideas of Swami Vivekananda.

In 1900, as directed by Swami Vivekananda, Swami Vijnanananda left for Allahabad to start a new centre there. On the death of Swami Akhandananda, Swami Vijnanananda became the president of Ramakrishna Math and Mission in March 1937.
