On this day an advertisement in Amrita Bazar Patrika addresses public speaking in a politically turbulent time. The English newspaper was published from the city.

With an illustration that had a man in European clothes speaking to a crowd below, the advertisement about Listol, an antiseptic gargle, came with a short poem.

Titled Speaker, it went: “Speaker you are but take care of throat/ Secure, if you must, the largest of vote/ All those who want to improve their voice/ LISTOL is surely the medicine of choice.”

Advice that holds today.
