On this day, Justice Sumboo Nath Pandit became first Indian to assume office as judge of Calcutta High Court

On this day, Justice Sumboo Nath Pandit became the first Indian to assume office as a judge of Calcutta High Court. He was followed by stalwarts Justice Dwarka Nath Mitter, Justice Ramesh Chandra Mitter, Sir Chunder Madhab Ghosh, Sir Gooroodas Banerji, Sir Ashutosh Mookerjee and Justice P.B. Chakravartti.

Pandit was born in a Kashmiri Pandit family. He grew up in Bhowanipore in Kolkata and studied Urdu and Persian in Lucknow.

He was a founder member of British Indian Association. At his home was established the Jnan Prakasika Sabha, which later became the Bhawanipore Brahmo Samaj. An important road and a government hospital in the city are named after Pandit.
