Maulana Azad College was founded on this day. Lord Bulwer-Lytton, the then Governor of Bengal, laid the foundation stone, after a sustained effort by Muslim leaders such as A.K. Fazlul Huq, the then minister of education of Bengal.
The institution was then called Islamia College and its objective was to advance Islamic learning and general education among Muslims. Its first principal was A.H. Harley.
After Independence, the college was named Central Calcutta College and was opened to students of all faiths. In 1960, it was renamed Maulana Azad College in the memory of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. In 1990, the college became co-educational.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first President of Bangladesh, had studied at the college.
