Sir Cecil Beadon arrived in India on this day. He served as the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal from 1862 to 1867. Beadon Street was named after him.

He held various appointments in the service of the British government in India. His role in the establishment of a uniform postal system in the country, the founding of Calcutta High Court and the uniting of the offices of the commissioner of police and chairman of the Justices of Peace.

His role as Lieutenantant-Governor general during the Orissa famine was severely criticised. He was held responsible for not doing enough to alleviate the suffering of the people during the famine.
