On this day, the first tea auction in India was conducted in Kolkata, under the instructions of R. Thomas & Company, general brokers, by the firm Mackenzie Lyall, at No. 2, Mission Row.
On September 15, 1886, the Calcutta Tea Traders Association was formed with the objective of promoting the common interest of sellers, buyers and brokers of tea in the Kolkata market. At that time, there were 41 members in the association.
The first English tea garden had been established at Chabua in Upper Assam in 1837.
In 1840, the Assam Tea Company had started the commercial production of tea.
