On this day the Calcutta Tramway Company was formed and registered in London. Meter-gauge tram tracks for horse-drawn carriages were laid down from Sealdah to Armenian Ghat, with Bowbazar Street, Dalhousie Square and Strand Road in between. Lord Ripon, the Governor-General, had inaugurated the route on November 1, 1880. On February 24, 1873, the first tramcar, a horse-drawn compartment, had run on the 2.4mile (approximately 4km) track from Sealdah to Armenian Ghat. But the service was withdrawn the same year. In 1900, the electrification of the tramway and the expansion of the tracks to 1,435mm began. The first electric tramcar in the city ran from Esplanade to Kidderpore on March 27, 1902.
