On this day, Amrita Bazar Patrika, published from Calcutta, carried the following report on its front page.
It said: “The British Foreign Secretary, Mr. Anthony Eden, in opening the War debate in the House of Commons summed up: ‘We were greatly encouraged by the outcome of our three conferences (the two Cairo conferences and the Tehran conference, all held between November and December in 1943) and so I believe were all our Allied colleagues (which included the US and the Soviet Union). I bring the House a message of good cheer, but these events give no cause for easy optimism.... The very magnitude of the plan to which the Allied leaders have given their approval will call for immense efforts in coming months from all United Nations. We have set ourselves a hard task in our determination to achieve victory at the earliest possible date. Great battles are impending.’”
