On this day Mukh O Mukhosh, the first full-length feature film with sound produced in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), was released. It was in Bengali and was directed by Abdul Jabbar Khan. This was a milestone for the region, which was known as East Bengal till 1955. The film industry was just beginning to take shape there. For some years after Partition, Urdu and Hindi films from Lahore or Bombay or Bengali films from Kolkata were being shown. In 1953, Khan was present at a meeting where he heard Fazle Dossani, a West Pakistani film distributor, claiming that the climate of East Pakistan was not suitable for filmmaking. Khan took this up as a challenge. He came to Kolkata and with the help of Moni Bose, a scriptwriter, selected a story based on a news report of a robbery. The film was shot in East Pakistan, at Kaliganj. The lead actor was Inam Ahmed. The film was a commercial success.
