On this day Indian Chief, a ship built in Calcutta and captured and sold to Americans, which had left New York on April 21, 1800, had reached Yarmouth.
It had reached Hamburg on June 13, from where it was sailing to Bengal, when it had been detained by the British sloop HMS Inspector. Seven bales of linen would be recovered from Indian Chief. HMS Inspector would share the prize money with the hired armed cutter Diligent.
Later, Indian Chief carried a cargo of rice from Bengal to Britain at a time Britain was facing grain shortage. Records show that Indian Chief reached Gravesend, Kent, on September 30, 1802. She was carrying “4150 bags of rice, 1800 bags of pepper, 98 bales of piece goods, 46 tons of indigo and six pipes of wine”.
