Yesterdate: This day from Kolkata’s past, August 21, 1938

On this day the then Bengal Prime Minister Fazlul Haque and the then finance minister of Bengal Nalini Ranjan Sarkar visited Raja Peary Mohan College in Uttarpara, following which a financial grant was approved for the college from the Directorate of Public Education in Bengal.
The college had been established in 1881 by philanthropist and educationist Raja Joy Krishna Mukherjee.
He supported Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar’s social reforms, including widow marriage.
He founded the Uttarpara library.
Joy Krishna had established many schools. After him his son Raja Peary Mohan Mukherjee, also a leading philanthropist and educationist who was engaged with and founded several educational institutions, took over as patron of the college.
The government grant helped to revive the college from a financial crisis. The college was named after Peary Mohan on October 4, 1953.
