Khudiram Bose was hanged to death on this day by the British in Muzaffarpur jail in Bihar at the age of 18. He remains one of the youngest martyrs of the Indian independence movement.
He and his colleague Prafulla Chaki had attempted to assassinate British judge Douglas Kingsford, who was seen by the revolutionaries as biased and inhuman. After a long period of preparation, Bose and Chaki had arrived in Muzaffarpur using false names and successfully evaded the police. On the chosen day, they had thrown a bomb at what they had thought was the judge’s vehicle in Muzaffarpur, but unfortunately he was not in the carriage. The two British women, who were, were killed. Khudiram was arrested and sentenced to death. Chaki killed himself to avoid arrest.
