Administrator in British India William Tayler was born on this day. He is most remembered for his controversial role during the 1857 Uprising.

He arrived in India in October 1829 and was appointed to various posts in Bengal, including postmaster-general. In 1855, he became the commissioner of Patna.
During the Uprising, he was seen by the British administration as having condemned and executed several men on insufficient evidence.

He was accused of ordering his fellow British officials in his division to abandon their posts. In August 1857, he was removed from his post and given a less responsible one.
In protest, he brought out a pamphlet from Kolkata. Later, he returned to England.
