The Indian naval forces were abolished on this day and made a part of British Admiralty.

The 1857 Uprising had been followed by the India Act 1858. The ‘Honourable’ East India Company’s assets came under the British crown, and the Indian naval force was placed under the British Admiralty and came to be known as “Her Majesty’s Indian Navy”.

Ships with troops from the new navy left for the China War of 1860.

In the following years, the Indian naval force was to undergo many structural changes as well as name changes. Before Independence, it was known as Royal Indian Navy.
