Tabbasum Begum was arrested after a group of women lodged a complaint alleging that she had cheated several of them by promising to return Rs 1.4 lakh in three months against a payment of Rs 1 lakh.

The women told the police that initially a few who deposited the amount with her received the promised amount, prompting many others to follow in her footsteps.

When Tabbasum failed to return the money, the women lodged a complaint with Ekbalpore police station. She was arrested on Saturday.

On Sunday, when Tabassum was being escorted out of a police van at the Alipore court, a group of women turned up and allegedly tried to snatch her from police custody. They demanded that Tabassum return their money.

Police officers who were accompanying Tabassum and cops in the court formed a cordon around her and took her inside the court.

The women who had gathered at the court complex continued to raise slogans for some time demanding immediate return of their money.
