Woman dies after being hit by a private bus on Prince Anwar Shah Road

The investigation of the case was later handed over to the fatal squad of the traffic department of the city police

A woman died after being hit by a private bus on Prince Anwar Shah Road on Monday morning.

Police said, Jaba Rani Pal, a resident of Deshapran Sashmal Road, was hit by a bus on route 47B around 11.25am.

“She received multiple injuries and was taken to MR Bangur Superspeciality Hospital where she was declared dead. The bus that hit her has been impounded,” said an officer of Calcutta police’s traffic department in Lalbazar.

The investigation of the case was later handed over to the fatal squad of the traffic department of the city police.

The driver and the helper of the bus fled.

The spot where the accident happened is close to Navina cinema and is frequented by hundreds of vehicles and pedestrians everyday.

“We are in the process of analysing the CCTV footage to check the exact sequence of the accident,” said an officer of the traffic department.

Metro has been reporting about the plight of Calcuttans who often become victims of rogue buses that violate traffic rules and often end up hitting people and motorists.

According to the records in Lalbazar, out of the 185 people who died in road accidents in the year 2022, as many as 45 accidents were caused by buses.

Police said they had been carrying out awareness camps, eye check-ups for bus drivers and counseling sessions for drivers and helpers to sensitise them towards the safety needs of a passengers.
