A woman was allegedly assaulted by a group of men and women on Kankulia Road near Golpark in south Kolkata on Saturday night when she had gone to feed stray dogs.
According to the woman’s complaint, she had gone to Kankulia Road around 9.30pm to feed stray dogs when she was first abused by a man in the locality.
“This was not the first time I have been targeted for feeding stray dogs. When one of the men abused me, I immediately called my local police station, Gariahat, seeking help. Two officers came. By then, around 25-30 people including women had gathered and they pushed me to the ground, on the mud, and dragged me by my hair,” the woman alleged.
The officers rescued her.
Later, the woman, a lawyer, lodged a complaint with Rabindra Sarobar police station, under which the spot where the incident happened falls.
Based on her complaint, police have started a case under sections of outrage of modesty, assault, criminal intimidation and criminal conspiracy.
The woman said more than the issue of feeding stray dogs, the men had targeted her because she had reported a case of verbal abuse in July against the prime accused in Saturday’s complaint — Khokon Sardar.
“Sardar and his men had been looking for an opportunity to settle scores,” the woman alleged.
Repeated calls to Sardar from The Telegraph went unanswered.
No one was arrested till Sunday evening.
