A Calcutta High Court judge said during a hearing on Thursday that he would “raise his voice against corruption like a fellow judge” if the situation so demanded.

Justice Biswajit Basu made the observation while hearing a case pertaining to the allegedly illegal recruitment of teachers and non-teaching staff in government-aided schools.

After going through a list of candidates who were appointed, Justice Basu said: “What is going on? Will these people teach our future generations? These people will have to be washed out first.”

He added: “A fellow judge of this court has raised his voice against corruption. If the situation demands, I will also raise my voice.”

The judge directed the CBI to place a report in connection with the case on November 18. Justice Basu did not name anybody but his colleague, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, has been the talk of the town for his self-declared “crusade against corruption”.

Justice Gangopadhyay has ordered at least 10 investigations by the CBI in connection with the school job scam since 2021. His courtroom observations have created ripples inside and outside the court. Justice Gangopadhyay and Justice Basu have been hearing education-related matters.
