A woman who runs a small nursing home in Usthi — a village in South 24-Parganas district — has been arrested for her alleged connection with the “sale” of a newborn for Rs 2 lakh.

“The woman, in her 40s, is directly involved in the child’s ‘delivery’ that happened in her nursing home in the third week of February,” said an officer of Baruipur police district.

An investigator said she was in contact with the other woman, who was allegedly instrumental in the child’s sale.

Both the women had gone to a location in Sonarpur to hand the infant to a man.

“After analysing their call details, it is clear that the two women knew each other well. The man who took the child from them handed it to a woman, who is apparently not in West Bengal right now,” the investigator said.

He said they were yet to ascertain the current location of the baby.
