Man holidaying with two friends on Mousuni island was allegedly in a drunken state

A 23-year-old man drowned in the Bay of Bengal at Mousuni island in South 24-Parganas district, around 120km south of Kolkata, on Friday, police said.

Sandip Shaw, a resident of Ultadanga area in northeast Kolkata, went to the island along with two friends on vacation, they said. Around 1.30pm, when the three friends were bathing in the sea, Shaw drowned.

Hearing the screams of his friends, local residents rescued him and took him to the Dwariknagar block hospital, where doctors declared him dead, police said. The three men were drunk, they said.

Shaw’s body was sent to Kakdwip sub-divisional hospital, where the post-mortem would be conducted on Saturday, they added.

Close to Kolkata, Mousuni island is a popular destination among youths for its beach camps.

Bike hits bike, 2 hurt

A motorcyclist and a pillion rider were injured when teh two-wheeler collided with another motorcycle on APC Road on Thursday evening.

Police said Ashibuddin Mohammad Ismail, 35, and his wife, Sonam Ali, 31, were treated at NRS hospital.
