The four-wheeler that overturned on Sarat Bose Road on Saturday evening had skidded on the road which had become slippery because of rain and crashed into the median divider, police said on Sunday following a preliminary investigation.
The police said the accident occurred while the car was taking a left turn from Hazra Road to Sarat Bose Road.
One of the tyres had burst under the impact of the collision, resulting in the vehicle getting overturned in the middle of the road.
The police said the accident occurred around 7.45pm. Prasiddh Sethia and Harsha Sethia, residents of Alipore, were in the back seat of the car.
“As the vehicle took a sharp left turn from Hazra Road to Sarat Bose Road, the car skidded and crashed into the median divider, causing the front right tyre to burst,” said an officer of the traffic department.
Seconds later, because of the tyre-burst, the sedan spiralled out of control and overturned.
“Luckily, there were no injuries. The couple and the driver — all three came out of the vehicle safely without a scratch. There was no need to take them to hospital either,” the officer said.
Another officer said the couple, who were seen standing near the overturned car, went to Bhowanipore police station to report the accident and ask for a motor-collision report.
The Telegraph could not contact the Sethias to verify the police’s statement.
The vehicle has been seized and will undergo a mechanical test to ascertain if it had developed any snag.
“It was sheer luck that the occupants were safe and that there were no pedestrians around that stretch. It was still raining and there were not too many people on the road,” said an officer of Bhowanipore police station.
A senior police officer of the traffic department said it was not clear if the vehicle was speeding. “We always advise motorists to reduce the speed when the roads are wet. It was drizzling when the accident happened on Saturday. The speed of the vehicle at which it was travelling is yet to be ascertained,” the officer at Lalbazar said.
