Moktar Alam, 23, and Rousan Ali, 22, were arrested about a week after Calcutta police issued an advisory on ways to prevent Aadhaar-linked bank frauds.

On August 28, Kanti Mukherjee of Baguiati lodged a complaint with the Shakespeare Sarani police station that he had lost about Rs 29,000 through unauthorised transactions from his account using the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS).

“After technical analysis of the available data, we found that a group of fraudsters were carrying out such crimes from locations in Islampore in Uttar Dinajpur and Araia in Bihar,” said an officer. “We tracked them and could zero in on the two men.”
