A man and a woman in their 20s have been arrested for allegedly robbing an app cab driver before driving away with the vehicle.
An officer of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate said Bunty Ranjit and Kajal Ram boarded the cab near Dum Dum station early on Saptami, Tuesday.
Ranjit told driver Birju Yadav that they wanted to go to Salt Lake’s AD Block, the officer said. When they were almost there, the two asked him to head towards Kestopur canal bank.
When they reached a dark and deserted stretch, Ranjit asked Yadav to stop and allegedly beat him up and took out a small knife. “When Yadav shouted for help, Ranjit slashed his cheek. Ranjit pushed Yadav out, snatched his wallet and mobile phones and fled with the car,” said the officer.
Yadav flagged down a passing vehicle and went to the police station. Cops scanned CCTV footage and tracked Yadav’s phones. The duo were arrested near their homes on Thursday after the police found the cab near Ranjit’s house.
The two have been charged under various sections of the IPC including 379 (theft) and 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery).
They were produced before a Salt Lake court that sent them to police remand.
